Build Connections and Your Future
Carly Shelter’s path to nursing in Santa Barbara began with a leap of faith—and a little help from the hospitality industry. Originally from a small town outside Philadelphia, Carly moved to Santa Barbara three years ago with a dream of becoming a nurse and living in California. She arrived in 2021, unfamiliar with anyone or anything in the city, and began her nursing prerequisites at SBCC.
To support herself, Carly took a job at The Nook at Lama Dog Tap Room. What started as a way to make ends meet soon became so much more. She found a welcoming and supportive network of friends, mentors, and fellow nursing students who helped her navigate the challenges of a new city and a demanding academic program. In the bustling world of hospitality, Carly not only found a steady income but also built a strong community, and the camaraderie among her coworkers helped her feel at home.
Two years later, Carly’s experience at Lama Dog has been integral to her journey. It’s given her the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, develop new skills, and feel a deep connection to her new home. Her story shows that the hospitality industry isn’t just about serving food and drinks—it’s about creating relationships, finding support, and building a foundation for the future.
