Meet the Chamber’s Executive Board Member

Joseph Cambray, Ph.D., has been President & CEO of Pacifica Graduate Institute since 2017, prior to that from 2015 he was Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the Institute.  He is on the Board of Governors of the Society of Jungian Analysts of Northern California and is the past-president of the International Association for Analytical Psychology.  For many years he was on the faculty of Center for Psychoanalytic Studies at Harvard Medical School in Boston before moving to the Santa Barbara area.  He is a published author of several books and an international lecturer.  Since 2000 he has been involved in psychological instruction and training in China where he has helped set up six sites and regularly visit China on an annual basis.  He has also brought groups of Chinese scholars to the Santa Barbara area for intense periods of study over the past 4 years.

Dr. Cambray is a member of the Executive Committee of the SB South Coast Chamber of Commerce and had previously been on the Executive Committee of the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce.  He was a part of the merger team which formed the SB South Coast Chamber of Commerce.  Pacifica Graduate Institute under his leadership has hosted legislative breakfasts in past years and hopes to do this again once the county is reopened for gatherings.  He has been the Education Industry Champion for the Chamber’s Roadmap to Recovery program.

Although born in San Diego, Joseph has lived in various locals nationally and internationally.  He received his doctorate from UC Berkeley and did post-doctoral research at Stanford, returning to CA as opportunities have arisen.  He has family in the Bay Area, and lives with his wife in Carpinteria, a town they have fallen in love with, walking the beaches most days.  He enjoys scuba-diving and travel, having led trips on the Silk Road in China and will be leading one next year to Switzerland.
